Bahariya Oasis lies about 370 km from Cairo in Egypt's Western Desert, with date palms, hot springs and villages at its centre. From here, 4x4 tracks lead to the volcanic hills of the Black Desert and the chalk formations of the White Desert National Park.
Best time for Bahariya Oasis tours
The Western Desert is at its best from October to April, and that is the most comfortable season for Bahariya Oasis tours. Days are pleasant for driving and walking, while desert nights can be cold in winter, so bring a warm layer. Summer days are very hot, and in those months it is wise to keep time in the open desert short.
Bahariya lies about 370 km from Cairo, so most travelers plan at least two days. The first covers the drive from Cairo and the oasis itself, with its date palms, hot springs and villages. The second follows the 4x4 tracks to the volcanic hills of the Black Desert and the chalk formations of the White Desert National Park.
Do not miss the white chalk shapes of the White Desert in the late afternoon light, the dark hills of the Black Desert and a rest at one of the oasis hot springs. Before you go, you can read about Egypt's protected sites on the official Egyptian monuments site. Pack sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and comfortable closed shoes for the sand, and keep a small bag with water and a jacket in the car.
Getting around and a first plan for Bahariya Oasis tours
Most visits are based in Bawiti, the main town of the oasis. Inside the oasis, distances are short, and you move easily by car between palm gardens, hot springs and the villages. Beyond it, the desert tracks need a 4x4 and an experienced desert driver, because sand and soft ground change with the wind. The open desert is not a place to drive alone.
A first visit often follows a simple rhythm. On the first day, after the drive from Cairo, you settle in and relax at a hot spring as the light fades. On the second day, the 4x4 heads out through the dark volcanic landscape, often stops at Crystal Mountain, a low ridge glittering with quartz, and reaches the chalk formations in the afternoon. Many travelers stay there for sunset.
Food in the oasis is simple and generous: fresh bread, rice, vegetables, grilled chicken and sweet tea by the fire in the evening. Bahariya is known for its dates and olives, which also make good gifts to take home. Fresh dates are harvested in late summer and autumn, and dried dates are sold all year.
Carry some cash in small notes, as card payment is not always possible in small villages. In the villages, ask before you photograph people, especially women: most people are friendly and appreciate being asked first.
For clothing, light and loose clothes that cover shoulders and knees are comfortable in the sun and respectful in the villages, where life is traditional. A scarf protects your face from wind and sand, and in winter a warm fleece is welcome as soon as the sun goes down. A small torch is useful at night, when the desert is very dark and the stars are bright.
