About this tour

If you have half a day in Luxor, Dendera is one of the best ways to spend it.

The Temple of Hathor, goddess of joy, love and music, still has its massive stone roof and underground passages. Its walls are covered in reliefs of gods and goddesses, and on the outer wall you find the rare relief of Queen Cleopatra and her son Caesarion. The Dendera Zodiac, a complete ancient map of the sky dated by Champollion to the Greco-Roman period, comes from the ceiling of a chapel to Osiris here. The original is now in Paris, and a cast sits in its place.

A licensed Egyptologist guides you through the temple and answers your questions. We pick you up from your hotel or Nile cruise in Luxor in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the entrance fee is already paid.

What to expect on the Dendera Temple half-day tour

If you have half a day in Luxor, Dendera is one of the best ways to spend it. This tour suits travelers who enjoy detail, since the Temple of Hathor, goddess of joy, love and music, still has its massive stone roof and underground passages.

On the outer wall you find the rare relief of Queen Cleopatra and her son Caesarion. The Dendera Zodiac, an ancient map of the sky, comes from a chapel ceiling here; the original is in Paris and a cast sits in its place. Egypt’s official monuments site has more on the temple.

The passages are narrow and some halls are dim, so a phone light helps. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat and water, and plan lunch afterwards, since it is not included.
